Our Team

CEO - Brian Hood

Brian joined the OBC management team as CEO after a long career in print media operations.

Originally from Queensland, Brian, his wife, Jeni moved to the 'GODZone' in 2005 after bucking the trend of cross-Tasman migration.  Their daughter Lizzie followed in 2007.

Brian and Jeni, feel privileged to live and work in NZ, particularly with great people and a fantastic boating facility, the OBC.

Brian's interests include boating, fishing, cycling, skiing, walking and spending time with his grandson, Henry born in 2016.

His favourite places to visit (and stay) are Wanaka and Matapouri.

Operations Manager - Mike Ragg

Mike joined the OBC in July 2017 as the Operations Manager.

Mike was born and raised in Auckland.  He has spent over 30 years in the Marine Industry - building and sailing super yachts.

During his time skippering the large yachts he has completely nearly two circumnavigations.

Mike made the decision to drop the anchor and look for full-time work in Auckland to spend more time with his young son, Max.

Membership, Administration and Invoice Enquiries - Anna Horridge

Anna joined the team in April 2017 having been a member since 2015.

Anna and her husband Will are the proud owners of a Buccaneer 565 called 'Sgian Dubh' which is Gaelic for Black/Hidden Dagger.  This is a reference to the 15 years Will spent in the HM Forces serving in a Scottish Infantry regiment and Anna as an 'Army Wife'.   They are now happily resettled back in New Zealand after living in Northern Ireland, Germany and SE England.

As well as fishing the Hauraki Gulf, Anna loves spending time at Lake Rotoiti, trout fishing and visiting the Manupirua hot pools and towing the kids around on skis and inflatables.  Learning to water ski is on Anna's bucket list.

Anna loves the location of the OBC especially the sea view from the office.

Events and Promotions - Erin Marmont

Erin joined the OBC in part-time capacity in October 2013 after taking a few years off to have babies and enjoy being a mum to two young boys.

Erin's background (and passion) is in Events.  Having previously organised large Expo's and the early planning stages of the Infrastructure surrounding the Rugby World Cup 2011.

Also a busy part-time Marriage Celebrant, she often officiates up to three weddings per week in the Wedding Season.

She has enjoyed a 'certain type of boating', having spent over three years aboard luxury super-yachts in the Mediterranean and Caribbean.  All part of her O.E spanning ten years.

Born and bred in Howick, Auckland, Erin also lived in Queenstown, Australia and the UK before finally settling back in Takapuna.

Erin thrives on planning and overseeing the OBC events.  She enjoys seeing the Members joining in and having a great time too!

Maintenance - Rob Curwain

Trailer Boat 'Mayhem'

Rob joined the OBC Team in February 2017 as Maintenance/Operations and has also been a member since 2012.

Rob has a fond love of the water including previously instructing as a Dive Master.  That was until a trip in the 90's sent him to the Navy Hospital in Devonport for 'the bends' where he was put in a decompression champer.

The Diving slowed down pretty quickly after that experience, now he enjoys being out on the boat having fun, fishing and occassionally just feeding them.

Rob loves the OBC's facilities and staff.  "They can't get rid of me, my 90 days is up!"

Accounts - Sasha Anderson

Sasha joined the OBC as the Finance Manager in May 2016.

Sasha, her husband David and their two boys, Josh and Ben have been OBC members since 2010.  They all enjoy boating and fishing but don't get on the water as much as Dave would like to.

Sasha also enjoys playing indoor netball, reading and travelling.

Membership and Administration (Afternoon) - Andree Sands

Andre'e has a great love of the water!   she has spent over 35 years extensively boating in and around the Hauraki Gulf and Great Barrier.

Andre'e has given up her sea legs to become a part-time farmer at Pakiri with her husband and family in the weekends.

Andre'e joined the OBC as part-time Administration and Membership in August 2017.   She is thoroughly enjoying her new position.

Weekend Operations - Jacob Samuel

Jacob first started working at the OBC in December of 2016 as a casual  worker over the summer.

In August 2017 Jacob joined the weekend operations team from which he knows he will learn many new skills and abilities - including all the good fishing spots.

2017 is Jacob's last year studying at Macleans College.

In his spare time Jacob likes to play football for Fencibles AFC in Howick.

Jacob's step-dad, Steve is a keen fisherman.  Jacob was brought up with the encouragement to fish however only recently become interested in it himself.

He is learning lots from the OBC and its members!

Commodore - Russell Watson

Boating, and in particular 'fishing' has been Russell's passion for over 30 years.

Russell became a member of the OBC shortly after arriving in Auckland in 2002 and became a member of the Executive Committee in 2013.

He enjoys helping and participating in events at the OBC and is also passionate about safety at sea.  Which lead to his involvement with the Technical and Safety sub committee and New Members Orientation evenings.

Russell retired from full time employment in 2013.  For 30 years he managed the NZ representative office of Swedish shipping company, Cool Carriers AB.  He continues to act as NZ representative on a part-time basis.

He also served as a Board Member of the Government Authority for Maritime New Zealand for over two years until August 2015.

Russell is married to Andrea with three grown up daughters who all enjoy boating.

Russell welcomes the opportunity to participate in the governance and workings of the OBC.

Vice Commodore - Bruce Taylor

Trailer boat - Resolution

The success of a club is a direct result of enthusiastic leadership and membership. The more active and supportive the members, the more successful the club will be.  After a number of years in a variety of positions on the Executive Committee, Bruce understands exactly how important this is to the future of OBC.

Acknowledging the current problems that face the club:

  • the cycleway
  • a new clubhouse
  • new amenities / maintenance block
  • resource consents for the marina

These issues will affect the club in the coming years.  Now more than ever, effective guidance is important.

Bruce has been a member various Committees.   He runs a commercial construction business, Ashworth and Taylor Sheetmetals where he has gained knowledge on the implications of the industrial Health and Safety legislation.

He has a life long interest in all activities that involve boating and water sports. He is pleased to be able to use his membership to support the club both commercially and as an individual.

With family high on the list of things that are important, Bruce and his family appreciate:

  • the family oriented club aspect of the OBC
  • its promotion of healthy marine environments
  • support of local charities
  • its ability to provide a focal point for like minded individuals
  • and its preservation for future generations

Club Captain - Martin Pringle

Trailer boat 'Espuma'

An incumbent on the OBC committee, Martin is a firm believer in the OBC's place as New Zealand's premier boating facility. He will continue to use his skills and experience as both a boatie and businessman to help ensure the club maintains and enhances its position in the greater community.

Growing up in a boating family, Martin enjoyed fishing, sailing and power boating; representing Auckland in dinghy sailing, and later progressing to keel boat racing. He has been enjoying recreational power boating for over 40 years now, and is also actively involved with Coastguard, serving as senior crew on the DRV Rescue Alpha.

Martin has been working in the IT industry for more than 30 years, and now specialises in computer network installations and cloud based business solutions.

Vice Club Captain - Mark Culley

Formerly the Commodore of the OBC. Over his time on the Executive Committee Mark has been involved in the marina, property, promotions and administration aspects of the club.

He has also been a dedicated sponsor of the kids fishing contest (through his company Plumbing Xtra).

Mark has also previously supported the children-only 'Pirates Fishing Competition', held on the jetty in front of the clubhouse and was instrumental in starting the Outboarder feature 'Sprat Chat'; giving the children a voice in the club magazine and encouraging their involvement in the club and its activities.

Known for getting things done Mark brings to the club both significant business skills, obtained over 38 years in the construction industry, as well as unbridled enthusiasm for progressing and growing the OBC for everyone's future benefit.

Alan has been a member of OBC since 1992.  He has a passion for piscatorial pursuits developed as a youngster and now targets gamefish, trout, salmon as well as the usual species found around the Hauraki Gulf.  His passion for boating developed much later but in conjunction with his fishing.

He has enjoyed helping and participating in events at the OBC over the years.

His wife, Wendy, young son and Alan's adult daugher also enjoy boating and fishing.

Alan has operated his own accounting practice for more than 20 years. He is looking forward to giving back to the Club that has enabled him and his family to enjoy everything that the Hauraki Gulf and other nearby marine precincts have to offer.

Immediate Past Commodore - Mike Hurley

Trailer boat 'Croc'

Mike has stepped his way up through the committee over the past few years; becoming Commodore in 2013 - 2016.

Born and schooled in Christchurch, Mike's working life has sent him around the country with Diesel Services; his employer since he started as an apprentice. Now Mike is in an ownership role with the same company.

For more than ten years Mike has been a part of the Association of Australian Diesel Specialists, holding office at a local level right through to the role of National President; giving leadership and direction to a diverse international membership.

Since joining the OBC, Mike has met some great friends and learnt a lot about boating and fishing in Auckland. He's also a strong proponent of the club's fishing competitions and social events and will be familiar to many from his efforts on the promotions team.

Executive - Montie Baskett

Trailer boat 'Zissou'

Outside of the OBC Montie Baskett is a corporate and commercial lawyer at Buddle Findlay. His background in resource management and environmental law is a valuable asset to the club and executive.

Montie and his partner Rossana live in Kohimarama, close to both the club, and the water - an important consideration for an avid boatie and fisherman who has been around boats his entire life.

Having joined the executive in 2011, Montie now has a couple of years experience in what it takes for a group of dedicated people to look after the OBC and its club members' interests. He has enjoyed working alongside committee members and others to develop and implement both long and short-term strategies and procedures within the club, and is looking forward to continuing to do so.

Executive - Cameron Fleming

Trailer boat 'Time Out'

Cameron is a passionate boatie, owning his trailer boat 'Time Out' for 25 years. He joined the OBC in 2006, having always admired the club's facilities as he drove past.

Since joining, Cameron has become increasingly interested in the medium to long term future of the club; in particular its threats and opportunities, and in 2012 he volunteered to be part of the Strategic Plan review, serving on the administration committee. Cameron is thrilled to now be a part of the executive committee, where he plans to use his skills to help set the future direction of the club.

Cameron is a commercial lawyer by training - 25 years at Russell McVeagh, and now in his own firm. During his time in practice Cameron has served on, and advised, many boards of directors; he has a strong interest in effective governance and strategic planning.

Outside of work, Cameron's interests include family (four daughters, all of whom adore boating) and education. In this regard, he has served on the board of St Cuthbert's College for nearly 20 years, eight of those as chairman.

Executive - Marc Malone

Executive - Graham Pearce

Boat 'Ruamano II'

Graham has been a member at the OBC for over 25 years.

Graham spent 10 years as an officer (graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst) in the New Zealand Army, including active service in Vietnam.

He then spent 10 years in export marketing into Asia, Middle East and South America.  During thsi time he lived and managed offices in Singapore and Panama.

For the past 25 years, Graham spent in leadership roles in Sports and Event Management, with CEO responsibilities in New Zealand.

This included large capital project developments and 18 years governance roles for the multi-million dollar global men's professional tennis circuit (ATP).  This included 11 years on the 6-person board of directors.

Graham has experience in dealing with Auckland Council on a variety of issues.

He is also a member also of the Master Planning Committee and Marina Management Committee.  He is looking forward to helping with the future development of our great facility.

Graham lives with his wife Carol in St. Heliers and they have two young grand daughters that keep them very busy.

Executive - Bill Berry

Bill loves his boating, especially since his retirement from the Packaging Industry in 2014.

He and wife, Elsa have a Jeanneau NC11 on Marina G10.

In 2015/16 Bill was deeply involved in the process to change Marina Governance from a Statutory Supervisor to 3 Trustees. As a result he was elected to Marina Trustee. With that experience, Bill felt he could make a greater contribution to OBC through the Executive Committee.  Successfully elected in 2017, Bill resigned his Marina Trustee position.

Bill provided support to Brian and Derek in the Blue Flag Environmental application. He is keen that we care for the OBC environment, so our future offspring inherit an OBC facility that has demonstrated commitment to environmental responsibility and that all OBC members are involved, so our "clean" record is second to none.

Bill has been open about his view that all MBLH's (Marina owners) should be members of the OBC (as of Sept 2017 approx. 50% are). The history as why this has occurred is clear, but time has moved on and he sees the advantage's to OBC and MBLH's as being very significant.

Bill is keen to ensure the interests of all OBC members are considered and protected, that proper process is followed and that the future of OBC is sustainable. The OBC in it's entirety is a unique facility and we must look after it.
